        Summary
The translating of a novel like Mrs. Dalloway proves to require extensive studying of narrative techniques and style. This thesis comprises a study of Free Indirect Discourse and how this has been implemented in the novel; extensive research into the novel's overall style, linguistic and narrative tools, and Woolf's 'new' way of writing within the modernist context; a contrastive analysis of English and Dutch, based on the problems that narrative and style may pose in the process of translating; and three passages from Mrs. Dalloway that have been translated into Dutch.
