Summary
An artist, Paul de Kort, filmed a couple of interesting experiments, showing a
cylindrical cavity, filled to some (shallow) depth with
water. He recorded the surface displacement (waves)
produced by 2 to 5 oscillating pins. As he used a `sweep' (gradual increase of forcing
frequency), the surface displacement passed through resonances in which the
propagating waves, together with the reflected waves, form a largeamplitude blinking
(standing) wave pattern. In this thesis, we will try to understand this phenomenon.
