Medical treatment of male dogs with vesico-urethral reflex dyssynergia (VURD)

Abstract

The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the use, effectiveness and possible side effects of terazosin, alfuzosin and tamsulosin in dogs with VURD. With the results, the medical treatment protocol of dogs with VURD treated at the veterinary clinic of Utrecht University and other veterinary clinics in the Netherlands could be enhanced. This study included 32 male dogs presented from 1-1-2016 until 31-10-2021 with a median age of 6.2 years (1.2-13 years) and body weight of 38.8 kg (17.5-58.3 kg). Terazosin was most often used in veterinary practice. It was not possible to draw significant conclusions about differences in effectiveness of treatment or side effects between the different types of α1-blockers. Alfuzosin did show promising results, yet further research is needed.
