        Summary
This thesis is concerned with the question in what ways American atheist rock and metal musicians are negotiating the role of religion in American society. In what ways are they perceived as being satanic, subversive, and un-American because of the way they express their opinions in their work? By looking at three case studies (Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, and Slipknot) this thesis tries to research what the role of atheism and atheists is in American society.
