"Goddys of metal and of ston": The auctoritas of the Roman gods in classical and Middle English literature.
Summary
This thesis discusses the auctoritas divina, the divine authority, of the Roman gods Jupiter and Mars within the theme of the cycle of Thebes. It is a comparative philological study which is based on close-reading. The texts discussed are Ovid's Metamorphoses, Statius' Thebaid, Chaucer's Knight's Tale and Lydgate's Siege of Thebes.
