dc.description.abstractThis thesis discusses the auctoritas divina, the divine authority, of the Roman gods Jupiter and Mars within the theme of the cycle of Thebes. It is a comparative philological study which is based on close-reading. The texts discussed are Ovid's Metamorphoses, Statius' Thebaid, Chaucer's Knight's Tale and Lydgate's Siege of Thebes.
