Power Dynamics in Adaptations of Jane Eyre: The Different Depictions of Jane and Rochester's Interactions

Abstract

In this essay, the power relationship between Jane and Rochester, as it is presented in Brontë's novel, is compared to four different film adaptations: the 1945 film by Franklin Schaffner, the 1983 TV series by Julian Amyes, the 2006 TV series by Susanna White, and the 2011 film version by Cary Fuknunaga. This is done by comparing 3 different scenes, present in all versions: the first meeting, Jane's departure from Thornfield, and finally her return to it. The power dynamic, as represented, heavily leans towards Rochester in the earlier adaptations, and moves back towards Brontë's equilibrium in the course of the 21st century.
