The emerging phenomenon of amateur subtitling of audiovisual material into Dutch is researched by making use of an open invitation online questionnaire and discussed in terms of Gideon Toury's theory of Norms in Translation. An overview of the field is given and several behavioural norms in subtitling are hypothesised. Furthermore, several different motivations for engaging in the activity of subtitling are described.
