        Summary
This study investigates whether Brazilian jiu-jitsu can be beneficial for the integration of young female immigrants in Europe. For this purpose an inquiry was made among Brazilian Jiu-jitsu athletes of different origin: natives, and immigrants of western and non-western origin – all EU residents. The research methods included a survey, interviews and observations. Based on the analysis of the survey and the interviews, we can affirm that Brazilian jiu-jitsu has a positive effect on three major integration issues of immigrant women in Europe: physical and mental health, and intercultural contacts. The data indicate that Brazilian jiu-jitsu practice has a beneficial impact on the integration of young immigrant women. Furthermore, the study hopes to contribute to a debate on what role sports – and more specifically martial arts – can play in the integration process of young female immigrants in Europe. Hopefully politicians, teachers, coaches, social workers and sports officials will become more aware of the positive social, physical and mental impact of martial arts on young women.
