Building Blocks for a Theory of Change: The Transformative Role of Impact Dimensions in Zoönomic Methods and Instruments
Summary
The zoönomy presents an alternative vision of an economy that works towards ecological regeneration and promotes the wellbeing of more-than-human life. Through applying zoönomic methods and instruments, “Zoöp” organisations translate this ambition into practical action. These zoönomic methods and instruments are characterised by three different impact dimensions: sensitising, organising, and strategizing. This research investigates the transformative potential of these impact dimensions with regards to the zoönomic transformation.
Within each impact dimension, three different dynamics were identified. They describe different approaches through which Zoöp organisations attempt to create impact. The organising dimension relates to manifesting regenerative and more-than-human inclusive principles in operational practices. Thereby, it constitutes the core of zoönomic transformations and offers an inspirational case of prefiguration. Sensitising approaches address transformations in participants’ inner worlds, such as their mindsets and affectual capacities. Internally, this stimulates their engagement for the Zoöp project. Externally, it contributes to cultural transformations towards the Zoöp philosophy. Lastly, through strategies of spreading practices, growing the movement and influencing higher institutions, the strategizing dimension is targeted at expanding the sphere of influence beyond the Zoöp organisations. This diversity of stimulating change on different leverage points is complementary. Regarding the currently low prioritisation on strategizing efforts, a stronger practical diversification in the future carries large potential for the transformative prospects of the zoönomy.
