Nature-based Solutions for Interior Architecture: The benefits for biodiversity, climate and human well-being
Summary
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly studied and implemented in urban areas. NbS provide both human well-being and biodiversity benefits. Interior architecture and design is of vital importance for human well-being, as humans spend over 80% of their time inside. Yet, NbS are rarely implemented inside. Up until now the literature on interior NbS is scarce and fragmented, especially regarding Oceania. This paper will outline the benefits of implementing NbS inside for biodiversity, climate adaptation and well-being and subsequently, give an overview of NbS suitable for interior architecture and design in Oceania. Benefits found include improvements of air quality, mental well-being, temperature and humidity regulation, water availability, energy use, food production and biodiversity.
Based on the research interior NbS are divided into four specific categories. This literature overview could serve as inspiration or a guide for interior designers.
