Another Round or Another Excuse? A Textual Analysis of the Representation of Alcohol and Masculinity in the Contemporary Danish Film Druk (dir.: Thomas Vinterberg, 2020)

Abstract

The intersection of alcohol consumption and masculinity in Danish film remains underrepresented in film studies, despite the cultural relevance of these themes in Denmark. Given the role of on-screen representation in reflecting and shaping societal norms, this thesis examines how Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round (Druk, 2020) portrays alcohol and masculinity. The film follows four middle-aged male teachers who adopt psychiatrist Finn Skårderud’s theory of daily alcohol use to revitalize their lives.

Through Richard Dyer’s approach to textual analysis , which includes description, contextualization, and interpretation, this thesis applies a theoretical framework on representation, alcohol, and hegemonic masculinity. The analysis reveals that alcohol is depicted as a socially acceptable means of renewal and emotional connection, enabling the temporary reclaiming of virility. Masculinity, however, emerges as fragile and unstable, redeemed only through female support. Women remain largely confined to secondary, supportive roles, underscoring the persistent gender imbalance in Denmark. This study broadens the field of film studies by addressing Danish cinema beyond Hollywood productions.
