        Summary
This thesis investigates the choices made by the text-makers that produced Wien, ÖNB, Cod. 748. The manuscript was produced in the monastery of Göttweig in the mid-twelfth century, and contains exegetical, papal and hagiographical texts. This thesis examines the whole manuscript, and treats it as a coherent compilation of ‘unoriginal’ texts. The texts are argued to have made new meaning in their manuscript context. The production of the manuscript was affected by contemporary concerns of the community, especially the negotiations of abbatial and episcopal authority that preoccupied the monastery throughout the first half of the twelfth century.
