dc.subject | This thesis will explore 3-manifolds. We will consider 3-manifolds of different complexity: the 'simplest' 3-manifold S^3, the lens space L(p,q) and then consider Heegaard splittings of a 3-manifold M. Morse theory is a useful tool for this, which we will explain the basics of. This will enable us to show some interesting results about the relation between Heegaard splittings and Morse functions. Furhtermore, we will consider knot-theory and an application of this in biology. | |
