Werkstraffen bij adolescenten: Dragen de bereidheid te voldoen aan de werkstraf en ouderlijk toezicht bij aan een succesvolle afronding?
Summary
To answer the research question “Do the adolescent's willingness to comply with community service and parental supervision contribute to a successful completion of community service among adolescents?”, data from the Landelijk Instrumentarium Jeugdstrafrechtketen (LIJ) made available by the Raad van de Kinderbescherming (RvdK) were used. The sample consisted of 50 participants, divided into a successful subgroup (N = 25) and an unsuccessful subgroup (N = 25). It was expected that adolescent willingness and parental supervision would be related to successful or unsuccessful completion of community service.
Chi-square tests, t-tests and a logistic regression analysis were conducted. The results showed that both parental supervision and the adolescent's willingness to comply with community service were not significantly related to successful or unsuccessful completion of community service. This leads to the rejection of the alternative hypothesis and acceptance of the null hypothesis. The age of the adolescent did appear to be significantly related to successful or unsuccessful completion of community service: the higher the age the greater the likelihood of unsuccessful completion of community service. Age was not found to be related to willingness to comply with community service, nor to parental supervision. In conclusion, age is a significant explanatory variable for successful completion of community service, with no correlation with the degree of parental supervision and/or the adolescent's willingness to comply with community service. Implications of these findings will be discussed in the discussion section.
