Ouder-Leerkracht Samenwerking: Wat Verwachten Ouders en Leerkrachten van Elkaar in de Opvoeding van Kinderen?
Summary
Background and aim. Collaboration between parents and teachers in upbringing of children is crucial for children's academic, personal, and social development. This collaboration presents several challenges, such as differing norms and values in upbringing. The aim of this research is to gain more insight into the mutual expectations of parents and teachers regarding collaboration in the upbringing of primary school-aged children. Method. Through semi-structured interviews with teachers (n = 9) and parents (n = 7), the mutual expectations concerning collaboration in upbringing were discussed. Results. Generally, both teachers and parents view parents as the primary responsible party for upbringing. The teacher has a supportive and supplementary role. Parents and teachers do not always agree on who has which role in the upbringing and about what they find important in upbringing. For effective collaboration in upbringing, trust, reciprocity, good communication, and an open attitude from both the teacher and the parent are considered necessary. Conclusion. The distinction between the roles of parents and teachers in upbringing is difficult to define. Teachers and parents both have an important role, hence effective collaboration between them is essential. In this partnership, it is essential to carefully consider each other's input and expectations, as parents and teachers jointly bear the responsibility for a child's upbringing.
