Beyond Survival: The Role of Volunteer Support in Helping Undocumented Migrants Navigate Uncertainty and Pursue Well-being
Summary
This ethnographic study explores the emotional and social dimensions of volunteer support for undocumented migrants in Utrecht, focusing on the services provided by Villa Vrede. Also, with the Capabilities Approach by Martha Nussbaum, the emotional aspect of her ten key pillars is explored in more detail. Amidst the restrictive policies faced by undocumented migrants in the Netherlands, Utrecht stands out for its relatively progressive approach, characterised by efforts to offer essential services and foster social inclusion. Through thematic analysis of interviews and participant observations, this research investigates three core questions: (1) What forms of emotional support do volunteers provide to undocumented migrants? (2) How do migrants perceive and experience this support? and (3) How does it impact their overall capability to lead a dignified life?
Key findings underscore the pivotal role of dedicated volunteers who employ three coping strategies to support undocumented migrants' journey towards self-improvement and emotional well-being. Providing a safe space for these undocumented migrants is crucial, allowing them to feel secure and express their emotions freely. Being free to express your emotions freely was also a key finding in this research. Furthermore, while emotional support is a significant part of the lives of undocumented migrants, it cannot fully substitute for the legal recognition and stability that they ultimately need.
This study reiterates the importance of safe spaces and community-driven support in enhancing the well-being and dignity of undocumented migrants. It underscores the need for more structured and sustainable approaches to volunteer support, which can address the challenges identified in the study. The research also recommends a more focused look at the other nine capabilities Martha Nussbaum identifies and a broader understanding of all service provisions that help in Utrecht.
