EX3 Discover the relationship between study choice and student success Title: Relationship between study choice and student success
Summary
This thesis investigates the relationship between orientation behavior, defined as the process by which students gather and consider information about potential study programs, and successful studying, defined as completing a study program within the stipulated time and with satisfactory academic performance, among students at Hogeschool Utrecht (HU). The aim is to improve the orientation process and facilitate optimal study choices.
Each year, Hogeschool Utrecht attracts a significant number of students who enroll in various study programs. However, a considerable proportion of these students prematurely discontinue their studies. To address this issue, this research will examine whether and how orientation behavior influences the likelihood of successful studying.
Hogeschool Utrecht possesses a wealth of data on the orientation process, and there is considerable interest in linking this information with data on successful studying. By jointly investigating these different datasets, valuable insights can be gained that have the potential to improve the orientation process and contribute to an optimal study choice experience for students.
The ultimate goal is lifelong learning, to educate students to become skilled professionals and reflective practitioners who succeed in the job market and make a difference in society. It all begins with accurate guidance to minimize dropout rates and motivate students to complete their studies.
The main research question that will be addressed in this thesis is:
- Is there a relation between study choice and academic success among students at Hogeschool Utrecht?
In addition, the following sub-questions will be investigated: “To what extent does students' prior educational background influence their academic success in the chosen field of study?”, “How does students' prior educational background relate to the time taken to complete the study program?”, “Does the age of students at the start of the study program affect their academic success?” and “ Is there a distinction in academic success between male and female students?”.
By undertaking this thesis, there is an opportunity to directly contribute to the realization of an optimal study choice process at Hogeschool Utrecht. The research will help uncover the impact of orientation behavior on successful studying and provide valuable insights for enhancing the overall student experience.
