A Double-Blinded, Randomized Study Comparing Silver Sulfadiazine and Polymyxin B Ear Ointments for Treating Chronic Otitis Externa in Dogs with Pseudomonas spp.
Summary
The efficacy of silver sulfadiazine ointment as a treatment against otitis externa cause by Pseudomonas aeruginosa was tested in comparison to an ointment containing Polymyxin B.
In this double-blinded clinical trial, dogs with Pseudomonas otitis externa were recruited and treated once daily for a period of 28 days with an ointment containing either silver sulfadiazine or polymyxin B, combined with triamcinolone. Additionally, the affected ear was cleaned twice weekly with a Tris-NAC® ear cleaner.
The dogs were examined on day 0, 7, 14 and 28. On those days, an extensive anamnesis was taken and a physical examination was performed. A score was assigned to both the findings of otoscopy and cytology. Bacteriological testing was done on day 0 and day 28.
