        Summary
Cartesius is a neighborhood that will arise in Utrecht, with the goal of establishing a neighborhood where residents can enjoy healthier and longer lives. It draws inspiration from principles found in the Blue Zones, regions around the world known for elevated life expectancy. The incorporation of nature is also important in Cartesius’ plans. This review explores how experiencing nature can have beneficial effects on our psychological and physiological health. Nowadays however, most of our time is spent indoor, deprived of nature. Through biophilic design, elements from nature can be extended into our living environment. In biophilic design, nature can be experienced directly, indirectly, and through space and place. This can, for example, be achieved by decorating a room with houseplants, or by having a window with a view of nature. Biophilic design also considers the use of bio-based materials in the living environment, which have a sustainable edge over conventional materials. Biophilic design elements have shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and enhance social cohesion. The current plans for Cartesius are promising, already incorporating biophilic elements in the outdoor environment. This review will suggest additions from literature and previous experiences to improve the current plans even further, such as incorporating houseplants indoors or having an aquarium. This review will emphasize the importance of nature in the living environment to achieve long and healthy lives among the inhabitants of Cartesius.
