        Summary
In the debate about Islam and modernity people often refer to the incompatibility of the values of Islam and modernity. In this thesis three Muslim authors, Abdolkarim Soroush, Tarig Ramadan and Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na`im, have been examined on their attempt to harmonize Islam and modernity. Each author took a different vantage point, which led to a different understanding of the essential Islam and how that essential Islam relates to modernity.
