Aim: The Anti-filter bubble project of Utrecht University aims at creating awareness of ‘filter bubbles’ under high school teenagers. This study examines the perspective of high school teenagers on platform guidelines, user data collection and personalization. As well as examines which intervention elements contribute to high school teenagers' reflection on these topics. Method: To discover their perspective the ‘platform lesson’ was created to analyze which elements of the platform lesson contribute to their reflection observations, duo and trio recall interviews were held among the 34 participants. Results: The results show that although the platform guidelines lack visibility, high school students are aware that there are rules. This awareness of platform guidelines comes from their own personal experiences of being on platforms. The opinions of the students reflect a lack of knowledge on the consequences of these platform practices. As well as a perspective which puts the users of platforms as most responsible for the content it consumes and the possible effects this has on society. Conclusion: In order to help high school students reflect on these platform practices and it’s possible consequences, the high school student as ‘experts by experience’ and educator need to work together.
