Background: Several studies show that early identification of problems in the development of early numeracy is very important to prevent math problems in later years. Several tests have been designed to measure early numeracy skills in preschool children. One of these is the Utrechtse Getalbegrip Toets [UGT]. Aim: The present study has investigated the concurrent and content validity of the third edition of the Utrechtse Getalbegrip Toets [UGT-3]. Procedure: The UGT-3 was taken among 407 Dutch children in second and third grade together with two Cito Mathematics tests. In the Netherlands, the Cito Rekenen voor kleuters is administered to children in the second grade, while the Cito Rekenen-Wiskunde is taken in the third grade. Results: The results show that scores on the UGT-3 and the Cito tests were significantly correlated. In addition, there was found that sex does not have a statistically significant moderating effect on the relationship between the results of the UGT-3 and the Cito tests. In the end, there was found that the ten components of the UGT-3 were not distinguished by factor analysis. There was no coherence in the questions per subject. Conclusion: The concurrent validity of the UGT-3 is sufficient, due to the strong consistency with the Cito tests. The variable sex does not have an influence the concurrent validity. The content validity is questionable, due to the incoherence of the questions per subject. Implications and future directions are discussed.
