For the development of prevention and intervention programs, it is important to further understand the development of parental structure. This study investigated whether the relationship between social-emotional behavioral problems in toddlers and maternal structure is mediated by maternal self-efficacy. The sample consisted of 100 mothers (M = 32.91 years, SD = 4.44) with a child between the ages of 24 and 47 months old (M = 34.78 months, SD = 6.86, 48% boys). The degree of maternal structure, maternal self-efficacy and the presence of social-emotional behavioral problems in children were measured using questionnaires completed by the mothers. The results showed an indirect effect between social-emotional problems and maternal structure, with maternal self-efficacy as a mediator. As mothers registered more social-emotional behavioral problems in the child, the lower the maternal self-efficacy. Due to the lower maternal self-efficacy, the structure mothers offered in the upbringing of their children was also found to be lower. It is recommended to conduct longitudinal follow-up research, examining bidirectional relationships to gain more insight into the relationship between the social-emotional behavioral problems in toddlers, parental self-efficacy and structure.
