        Summary
Adolescents who experience depression symptoms are at higher risk of developing suicidal behavior. In addition, depression symptoms may cause personal depression stigma, which also is a risk factor for developing suicidal behavior. The aim of this study is to review if the relationship between depression symptoms and suicidal behavior is mediated by personal depression stigma. Methods. The concepts depression symptoms, suicidal behavior and personal depression stigma have been reviewed using the standardized questionnaires from the cluster randomized controlled trial of Gijzen et al. (2018). Current study included 202 adolescents with a mean age of 14 years (range 14-17). A step-by-step multiple regression has been used to identify the relation between depression symptoms, suicidal behavior and personal depression stigma. Results. Depressive symptoms are associated with an increased risk of suicidal behavior (B 1.25; 95% CI 1.11, 1.40 ; p < 0.001). There is a partial mediation of personal depression stigma in the relation between depressive symptoms and suicidal behavior (B 1.29; 95% CI 1.14,1.43; p. <.001). Conclusion. The mediator personal depression stigma plays a partial role in the relation between depression symptoms and suicidal behavior in adolescents. Cognitive behavioural interventions and providing information about depression may reduce personal depression stigma, and therefore the risk of suicidal behavior.
