Children whose parents are born in a foreign country tend to be less prepared in early mathematics compared to native children. Aims: This research examined whether there are differences in early mathematics between children with and without a migration background in the Netherlands. The effects of age and gender on this relation are also examined. Method: 866 children between 4 and 7 years old were examined using the Utrechtse Getalbegrip Toets 3. This test is used to examine the level of pre-mathematical skills of preschoolers. Results: A significant effect was found for migration background on early mathematics. Age and gender on the other hand did not have a significant effect on the relationship between migration background and early mathematics. Discussion: It becomes clear that the extra help teachers provide for children with a migration background is relevant and necessary. Further research is needed on differences between and within diverse migration backgrounds.
