Introduction. In the Netherlands no reliable instruments exist for the screening/risk taxation for child abuse between 2-4 years. The Dutch Observatielijst voor de Kindveiligheid (versie peuters en kleuters) was designed to identify risk factors for child abuse within families. The reliability of this instrument has not been studied yet. Therefore the inter-rater reliability, the internal consistency, the significant agreement between SDQ and OvdK and the usability were calculated. The definition of child abuse is: any act, or failure to act, which results in emotional, physical and sexual abuse and neglect. Methods. Early childhood education center employees (n = 181) were each asked to fill in questionnaires about three randomly assigned children. Also parents (n = 255) were asked to fill in a OvdK about their child. Results. Outcomes of this study showed that the inter-rater reliability of the OvdK was high, the internal consistency was low there was no significant agreement between the SDQ and the OvdK and the usability was inadequate. Conclusion. No clear conclusion can be drawn about the reliability of the OvdK. Therefore, further research will be required in order to determine the reliability and usability.
