Abstract

The aim of the current study is to investigate whether there is a correlation between the amount of warmth and conflict in sibling relationships and the internalizing and externalizing behavioral issues of toddlers. A random sample was used for data. An online questionnaire was created, for which a total of 849 mothers completed it. The questionnaire was about the quality of the relationship between their toddler (aged 4-6 years) and their siblings as related to concepts of warmth and conflict (PRE-SIB). In addition, the questionnaire referred to possible internalizing and externalizing behavioral issues for their toddler (CBCL, 1.5-5 years). The results show that there is a significant negative correlation between warmth and internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems. A significant positive correlation was found between conflict and internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems. The hypotheses formed on the basis of previous research results can be accepted. It has also been found that for preschool children a higher degree of warmth in the sibling relationship is associated with less behavioral issues. Thus, a higher degree of conflict is associated with increased behavioral issues for preschool children. The results of this study provide an interesting basis for future research and targets for official intervention.
