De relatie tussen de aanwezigheid van ontwikkelingsmateriaal thuis en getalbegrip bij kleuters
Summary
Background: This study examined the relation between home numeracy experiences and early numeracy skills of toddlers, drawing on a sample of 120 children between the ages of four and six. Next to this, the relationship between parent education level and home numeracy experiences was examined. Methods: The numeracy of 444 children in the age range of four to six years was assessed using the Utrechtse Getalbegrip Toets – 3 (UGT-3). Parents completed a questionnaire about the home numeracy activities and their educational level. Due to a smaller response than expected, only 120 children were included in the analyses. Results: Home numeracy experiences did not have a significant effect on the early numeracy skills. The educational level of fathers had a significant relation with home numeracy activities. Conclusion and discussion: Home numeracy experiences did, according to this research, not play a role in the development of early numeracy skills. This is contradictory to the existing literature and may be caused by the limitations of this thesis. The educational level of fathers had a significant relation with home numeracy activities. This result is supported by the existing literature, which concludes that parents with higher income take part in more home numeracy activities. Limitations and strengths of this research and suggestions for future research are given.
