        Summary
Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences between the emotional and educative process quality in day care centers and preschools. The study also examined whether this difference was influenced by the activities provided in the classrooms. This study aims to provide more insights into the differences in quality between the day care centers and preschools. Method: Several questionnaires were filled out by childcare professionals of 40 day care centers and preschools from Stichting Bink in Hilversum and Soest. The emotional and educative quality was measured with the CLASS observation tool at 26 day care centers and 14 preschools. A MANCOVA was used to analyze the data and investigate the hypotheses. Results: There was a significant difference in educative quality between day care centers and preschools, with preschools scoring higher on educative quality. There also was a significant interaction-effect between classroom activities and type of organization on educative quality. There was no significant difference in emotional quality between day care centers and preschools, nor were classroom activities of influence on the emotional quality. Conclusion: We found that preschools have a higher educative quality than day care centers. We also found that preschools have a higher score on classroom activities in combination with educative quality than day care centers. This study provides more and new insights into the differences in quality and classroom activities between the day care centers and preschools.
