It is important that children have an adequate level of early numeracy, because it can prevent them for later problems with numeracy or mathematics. The level of early numeracy can be measured by different tests, such as the ‘Utrechtse Getalbegrip Toets - Revised’ (UGT-R) and the ‘CITO Rekenen’. In this research the question is examined if there is a connection between the scores on the UGT-R and scores on the CITO Rekenen for 6-8 years old children (n=139), to find out if these tests both measure early numeracy. Also, the question is examined if there is a connection between the used method for mathematics education (Pluspunt and Wereld in Getallen-4) and the scores on both UGT-R and CITO Rekenen. The results show that scores on the UGT-R en CITO Rekenen were significantly connected. No significant differences in scores between the used methods were found, except for scores on two sections of the UGT-R. It can be concluded that UGT-R en CITO Rekenen both measure early numeracy. Also, Pluspunt and Wereld in Getallen-4 show mostly the same results in early numeracy, but they do differ in some parts of early numeracy. Strengths as well as limitations are discussed and lastly there are suggestions for future research.
