dc.description.abstractThe primary purpose of this thesis is to research if a domesticating translation approach is used in translating two of Ḥanān aš-Šaiḫ’s novels to Dutch, and if so, how this translation approach has represented her novels in the Netherlands. By comparing the previous findings of Prof. Michelle Hartman on the one hand and a translation criticism of the Arabic, English and Dutch texts on the other hand, this study aims to determine if the same results apply for the Netherlands, whilst first contextualizing Ḥanān aš-Šaiḫ in the source culture and outlining the birthing ground of the Arabic novel. The findings show that there is a demonstrable domesticating translation practice, along with a reception dynamic that frames Ḥanān aš-Šaiḫ in a different perspective in the receiving culture, than in the source culture. Moreover, the same shifts in translation are identifiable in the English and Dutch translations.
