dc.description.abstract | This thesis focuses on the constructing of Frisian identity by the Fries Museum in the period from 1877 until now.
The different features of the Frisian identity are analysed by looking at several exhibitions. The different subjects of the exhibitions as well as the objects of those exhibitions are analysed, and continuity and discontinuity will be addressed. Chapter 1 discusses the Historische Tentoonstelling of 1877. Chapter 2 focuses on the period from 1881 till approximately 1952. The period from 1952 till the present day is analysed in the final chapter.
The conclusions from this thesis not only contribute to the analysis of regional identities in the Netherlands, but can also be used in a broader context. Research on identity in language-based minorities in Spain or Germany, for example, would also benefit from the approaches used in this thesis. | |
