        Summary
In this study the effectiveness of the mathematics program ‘Met sprongen vooruit’ was examined. ‘Met sprongen vooruit’ is a training program for addition and subtraction to 100, especially intended for students with weak arithmetic skills in grade 2. The programme is rooted in the tradition of Realistic Mathematics Education and emphasizes the use of the empty number line and of the stringing strategy (in contrast to the splitting strategy). A group of students (n = 39) from a primary school participated three times a week in 15 minutes sessions of ‘Met sprongen vooruit’. At the end of an intervention period of 13 weeks the experimental group performed better than a control group in a test containing addition and subtraction problems to 100. The same result was found for a sample of students with weaker skills in mathematics to 100 (n = 27).
