Integration of 3D Visualization and Molecular Interactions Using Molecular Modeling within the Context of Drug Development Against Malaria Disease for Learning in Chemistry Education.

Because of the introduction of Molecular Modeling (MM) as a new topic within science education, teaching students to use models and modeling has become more important. This study focuses on the integration of 3D visualization and molecular interactions using MM. A curriculum unit within the context of drug development against malaria disease is designed and implemented in Chemistry class. This study involves the analysis of three components of this curriculum unit: the motivational contribution of the context of drug development, the logical sequence of the expert approach and the integration of 3D visualization and molecular interactions. Data were collected using classroom observations, questionnaires, interviews, student presentations and written answers. Results show that both the context of drug development and the expert approach within the curriculum function to a sufficient extent to support this integration of 3D visualization and molecular interactions. Some adjustments are mentioned to improve the curriculum unit for implementation in class.
