        Summary
This thesis explores the advantages of literary lessons that focus on social issues rather than traditional aspects of literature lessons. By using Shakespeare's 'Othello' and 'The Taming of the Shrew' as examples I explore the social issues of discrimination, sexuality and gender, and relationships and how these issues could be used to actively envolve students with the text. I also look at some other innovative ways to approach Shakespeare in the classroom.
