In this thesis, I investigate how sacred space is demarcated and shaped in different eras of ancient Greek history. I look at architectural and ritual demarcations of sanctuaries, using a range of primary and secondary literature on the subject, as well as architectural evidence (in the form of excavation reports and catalogs). The thesis is divided in three chapters, each dealing with one era: 1. the Bronze Age, 2. the Early Iron Age and 3. the Archaïc period. Special focus is placed on continuity and discontinuity between the three eras.
