In 1623, when the Dutch East India Company opened two trading posts in Safavid Iran, a Flemish painter (Jan Lucassen Van Hasselt) already held a influential post as court painter and magistrate of shah ' Abbas I. From 1623 onwards, Van Hasselt was crucial for the Company's success and helped it reach the status of the most powerful European trading power in Safavid Iran. In this thesis, his influence on this process from 1623 up until 1655 is being examined.
