Abstract: There is a lack of agreement about the influence of special education on self-esteem in current literature. This study examined the impact of special education on the level of self-esteem. Specificity of self-esteem and stability of self-esteem were also examined in this study. The survey was administered to 42 children between 8 and 12 years old. These children were all diagnosed with a DSM-IV disorder and all went to special education schools. It was expected that children who attend special schools for a longer time, have a higher level of self-esteem. It was also expected that older children have a more stable specific self-esteem and a more instable global self-esteem. Partial correlation tests have been conducted. Results showed a negative significant correlation between years in special education and self-esteem concerning physical appearance. There was no significant correlation between the years on special education schools or age, and the stability of self-esteem.
