        Summary
This thesis is an analyses of the conflict in Somaliland, an autonomous region in Northern Somalia. In the thesis the background, start, course and aftermath of the conflict are analyzed. By identifying the different clans and traditional institutions, analyzing colonial and post-colonial history, studying the reconciliation process and the developments in statebuilding, indicate the turning points and identify the major successes and major challenges, I have tried to gained insight into the answer to the question: How did the relations between traditional Somaliland institutions and the young Somaliland government develop between 1991 and 1997?
