Quantitative distribution assessment of HoAcAc microspheres and HoPLLA microspheres after direct injection
Summary
This experimental study on interstitial brachytherapy describes the distribution of HoAcAc microspheres and HoPLLA microspheres after direct injection in tissue. The microspheres were injected in pieces of chicken breast and the distribution was assessed quantitatively using autoradiography. Two types of microspheres (HoAcAc MS and HoPLLA MS), two different dosages of microspheres (4 mg and 18 mg) and three different amounts of suspension fluid (0.1 ml, 0.2 ml and 0.3 ml) have been used. The results show that the microsphere distribution depends on all three parameters. The most homogeneous distribution of microspheres was obtained with the injection of 18 mg HoAcAc microspheres suspended in 0.3 ml suspension fluid. The results are relevant for further research on the distribution of microspheres to optimize the technique of interstitial brachytherapy.
