Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the influence of religious backgrounds and the developmental theories from Piaget and Vygotsky on choices that were made concerning language policies at the catholic Institute for the Deaf (IvD) in the period 1980 to 1985. The unraveling of these influences on language policies may provide knowledge that can be taken into consideration when conducting future research. Methods: This study is a content analysis. Data were collected from a professional journal, using systematic analysis. Results: The results showed that several important aspects of catholic pedagogical theory were incorporated in the education that the IvD provided. The developmental theory from Piaget was mentioned to a lesser extent with reference to language policies of the IvD. The developmental theory from Vygotsky did not yield relevant results. Conclusion: Language policy on the IvD appears to be mostly influenced by religious backgrounds and to a lesser extent by the developmental theory from Piaget in the period that was studied. Results that showed that the developmental theory from Vygotsky had any influence on language policy of the IvD, has not been found.
