Alexander Alexeïeff and the Art of Illustration

Abstract

Alexander Alexeïeff (1901-1982) was an illustrator who was particularly concerned with the defence and theoretical explanation of his craft, and who sought to elevate illustration to the status of an art. This thesis examines how he did so, in theory and practice, thereby hoping to initiate a study of the art theories of illustration.
