Young people not only learn at school but also from other educative systems, as evidenced by existing theory. Learning also takes place on social media, both directly and indirectly. This learning happens mostly in digital learning communities. Reasons for this are the social contacts in the community and the common values and norms. These reasons increase the will to learn. TikTok is an app where communities like these exist. The app is very popular among young people. They learn, there is a community, and because young people keep posting videos, there is a certain type of motivation. This motivation to perform has been researched in this thesis. The central question of this thesis is: how do young people experience their performance motivation in the learning community of TikTok? This qualitative research happened conform the grounded theory. Semi structured interviews have been held with nineteen Dutch participants. These participants make videos about beauty, among other things. They all have been selected on this criteria. In the results of this thesis, there appeared to be no connection between participants’ motivation and this particular community (beauty), since they did not feel a part of that community. They did however feel part of the larger Dutch TikTok community. The results tell us that participants are motivated because of different reasons. Because of their motivation and their experiences of belonging to a community, young people come to a certain type of identity development. This has been compared to the existing theory. Further research regarding the identity development is recommended at the end of this thesis.
