The objective of this thesis is to investigate how the media are related to the onset of public panic. The point of departure is the example of the media hype about the paedophile Robert M. Television broadcasts are analyzed with the use of a discourse analysis. Concepts such as deviant behavior, role playing and stereotyping are of great importance. In a broader view the thesis concerns the question what the relationship is between panic, public and the public debate in the media.
