Nowadays, young adolescents receive peer feedback not only face-to-face, but also online on social media. Social media have been developed to stimulate positive peer feedback. Both face-to-face and online peer feedback have an effect on the development of young adolescents’ social behavior. However, little evidence has been provided as to whether the social behavior of young adolescents has an effect on receiving positive peer feedback online. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether there is a relationship between social behavior (i.e. social competence, pro-social behavior) and positive online peer feedback. We used survey data from 785 Dutch young adolescents (9-14 years old) participated. Two multiple regression analyses were used to examine whether prosocial behavior or social competence are relevant predictors of positive online peer feedback. Our results indicated that these young adolescents were more likely to receive positive online peer feedback, (a) when they show prosocial behavior in everyday life and/or (b) when they are socially competent. The young adolescents’ high scores on offline social behavior were linked to high scores on receiving positive online peer feedback. Our results provide first evidence for the positive relationship between social behavior and positive online peer feedback.
