dc.description.abstract | Objective. The aim of this study was to examine the relation between parental rules about sex and dating and parental attitude about the sexual double standard (SDS) on the implicit SDS stereotypes of Dutch adolescent’s. Also it was examined whether these associations were different for boys and girls. Method. Dutch adolescents (n = 259), aged 16 to 18, filled out an online survey. To assess parental rules, questions about sex and dating restriction where asked. The ‘Scale for the Assessment of Sexual Standards among Youth’ (SASSY) was used to assess parental attitudes about the SDS. Implicit stereotype SDS cognitions where assessed with the Implicit Association Test (IAT). Results. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that there was no significant association between both parental rules and parental attitude with the implicit SDS stereotypes, for both boys and girls. There was also no significant difference between boys and girls in SDS stereotypes. Conclusion. Parental rules and parental attitude have no significant association with implicit SDS stereotypes, also there was no gender difference. A possible explanation for this could be that the online survey was self-report, instead of parental report, so the results might not be a valid measurement for parental constructs. The online survey was also short in questions, which doubts the construct validity. Therefore, further research is recommended. | |
