Discipline is seen as an important part of raising children. Recent studies about gender give conflicting conclusions whether the gender of children and parents make a difference in the way a child is disciplined. In this study is tested if the gender of parents and children make a difference in the use of types of discipline. The participants were 697 families, existing of a father, mother and child aged 11 to 66 months. The finding of this study showed that mothers had used more control and positive discipline than fathers. Fathers, on the other hand, used more negative and psychological discipline. Gender of children did not make a difference in the way parents disciplined their children. Last there was no interaction found between the gender of the parent and the gender of the child. Concluding, fathers discipline their children more with negative and psychological means, while this has negative effects on children.
