Number sense is important for the development of further mathematical knowledge. Difficulties in early numeracy can interfere with the acquisition of mathematical skills in primary and secondary school. Counting development can be seen as the first step towards early numeracy. This study examines if the number sense training ‘Ut kleuterREK’ provides a significant improvement in counting development. It also examines the role of the level of numeracy and working memory, and their effect on the training. Although a significant effect has been found in numeracy for children who participated in the training program, much of this effect was caused by working memory. No significant influences were found for the level of early numeracy and working memory on the effect of the training.
