In various cities in the Netherlands creative breeding places (broedplaatsen) have been and still get realised with their primary goal of offering affordable working space for artists and creative entrepreneurs. The municipality of Amsterdam has institutionalised the creation of broedplaatsen in the department Bureau Broedplaatsen. Bureau Broedplaatsen works together with various different partners like artist groups, housing corporations or broedplaatsen-managing organisations. This thesis tries to show the main similarities and differences, regarding motivation, goals and practices between the main actors engaged in the creation of broedplaatsen in Amsterdam. At the same time it tries to explain which role broedplaatsen play for the cultural, economic and social functioning of the city.
